The Accounting Skill Gap Just Got Smaller: Introducing Tyms MCP
That gap, between running a business and actually understanding its finances, is one of the biggest silent killers of SMBs everywhere. It's worse in emerging markets, where most businesses don't have a finance team, can't afford one, and are left guessing.

I have spent the last few years building Tyms because of one problem I kept seeing over and over. Founders who are brilliant at building products and closing deals, but who freeze the moment someone asks them what their gross margin looks like. Accountants doing incredible technical work, buried under so many tools that half their week disappears into data entry instead of advice. CFOs who have the numbers, but spend more time formatting a report than interpreting it.
That gap, between running a business and actually understanding its finances, is one of the biggest silent killers of SMBs everywhere. It's worse in emerging markets, where most businesses don't have a finance team, can't afford one, and are left guessing.
Today we're closing part of that gap. We just released the Tyms MCP server, and I want to talk about why it's a bigger deal than it sounds.
What actually shipped
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Think of it as a secure bridge that lets AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity connect directly to your real business data, in real time, with your permission.
With Tyms MCP connected, you can now open Claude or ChatGPT and just ask:
"What does our balance sheet look like as of today?"
"List unpaid invoices over 30 days and group them by customer."
"Show expenses for March and highlight the top 5 categories."
And it answers, using your actual books. Not a demo. Not a template. Your numbers.
If you turn on the full read and write endpoint, it goes further. You can tell your AI assistant to create an invoice, record a payment, add a new expense account, restock inventory, or convert a quote into an invoice, all in plain English, with Adam (our AI accounting agent) doing the accounting logic underneath. Every write action still goes through a confirmation step in your chat client, so nothing changes in your books without you approving it first.
Under the hood, access is scoped tightly. OAuth connects one specific Tyms business at a time. Your API keys never touch Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity directly. You choose read-only or read and write. You can revoke access at any time. We built it this way on purpose, because trust is the actual product here, not the AI.
Why this matters beyond the feature list
If you're a CEO or founder, this means you no longer need to wait for someone to prepare a report before you can ask a question. You can interrogate your own numbers the way you'd ask a sharp CFO a hard question in a hallway. No dashboard to learn, no spreadsheet to build. Just ask.
If you're a CFO or finance lead, this is not a replacement for your judgment, it's a way to get the grunt work off your plate. Pulling a trial balance, chasing overdue invoices, drafting the first pass of a reconciliation. All of that can now be delegated to an assistant that actually understands your chart of accounts, so you spend your time on the analysis that needs a human brain.
If you're an accountant or bookkeeper, especially one serving multiple small clients, this changes how much ground you can cover. Instead of logging into five different portals to check five different clients' books, you can ask one assistant, across sessions, and get consistent answers. The routine parts of the job get faster. The advisory parts get more room to grow.
If you're not a finance person at all, and let's be honest, most business owners aren't, this might be the biggest unlock of all. You don't need to learn accounting terms to understand your own business anymore. You just need to be able to ask a question the way you'd ask a person.
Why this matters even more in emerging markets
In markets like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and across much of Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, the traditional accounting stack was built for economies with cheap, abundant finance talent. That is not our reality. A huge share of SMBs here run on a mix of memory, WhatsApp messages, and a notebook, not because the owners don't care about their numbers, but because proper bookkeeping has always required a skill and a cost that wasn't accessible to them.
AI closes that gap in a way that legacy software never could. It doesn't require training. It doesn't require hiring. It meets business owners exactly where they already are, in a chat window, speaking their language, answering their actual question instead of forcing them to learn a system first.
That's the real opportunity in front of us. Not just smarter software for people who already have finance teams, but real financial visibility for the millions of businesses that never had it. If AI is going to close the gap between the Global North and emerging markets in any sector, accounting and financial literacy for small business is one of the most direct places it can happen.
The bigger trend, and why we're leaning into it
Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are no longer just chat windows. They're becoming the front door to how people work with every tool they use, your calendar, your inbox, your CRM, and now, your books. We built Tyms MCP because we believe the businesses that win the next few years will be the ones whose software shows up wherever their owners already are, instead of asking them to come somewhere new.
We're just getting started. Reports, write actions, and Adam-powered creation are live today, and there's more coming.
If you run a Tyms business, you can connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity in a few minutes. Full setup steps are at https://developer.usetyms.com/mcp/overview.
If you don't use Tyms yet and this is the first time you're hearing about us, we build AI-native accounting software for growing businesses, starting in Africa and built for the world. Come see what your books sound like when they can finally talk back.
